Cheap Sex formed in London in 1977, a punk band known for raucous performances and confrontational lyrics. Their lineup included vocalist Steve Strange, guitarist Viv Albertine, bassist Andy Czejkowski, and drummer Andy Duncan. Strange's androgynous appearance and flamboyant stage presence became central to their image.
Their song "Backstabber" came out in 1978 and became a punk anthem, with lyrics that condemned hypocrisy and betrayal. The band released albums like "Cheap Sex" in 1978, "We Are the Damned" in 1979, "Vive Le Rock" in 1980, and "Disturbia" in 1981. Other songs in their catalog include "Fear In The Night," "I'm Sick," and "Headed For a Breakdown."
Cheap Sex disbanded in 1982. Steve Strange later pursued a solo career, while the other members continued working in music in various ways.
