Cheburashka formed in the mid-1980s Soviet Union, led by vocalist Boris Moiseev. Their song 'Goluboy Vagon' became a pop anthem during a period of cultural change. The band's flamboyant stage presence and provocative lyrics drew both admiration and criticism from different parts of Soviet society.
Their openly gay members and sexually suggestive performances challenged prevailing norms, leading to censorship and establishment criticism. Despite this, they maintained a loyal fan base. They released albums like 'Disko Alya-Ulyu' in 1988 and 'Gorod Lyubvi' in 1993, with their sound evolving from electropop to incorporate more rock and dance elements.
Boris Moiseev's powerful vocals and persona were central to the band's identity, with guitarist Nikolai Trubach contributing to their musical direction. Another song, 'Den' Rojdeniya', also became part of their catalog. They collaborated with artists including Alla Pugacheva.
