Cheka formed in Madrid around 1999, with Fernando Madina on vocals, Fernando Montesinos on guitar, and Pedro Fernández on drums. Their name came from the Soviet secret police, which set a certain tone from the start. They put out their first album, "Canciones Para El Alma," in 2003.
That debut included "Amor Bandido," a song that caught on nationally and gave the band its first real break. The track's straightforward rock arrangement and Madina's delivery connected with listeners, pulling Cheka out of the local circuit.
There was some trouble with the name later on. Spanish authorities objected to "Cheka" because of its historical associations, and the band had to adjust it legally to "Cheka.7" for a period. They kept recording after that, with albums like "El Camino Del Gitano" in 2005 showing a shift toward incorporating more folk and blues touches alongside their rock foundation.
