Chi Coltrane was a band that came together in Los Angeles in the early 1970s. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1971, and it included songs like 'Goodbye John' and 'The Wheel Of Life.'
Evelyn 'Champagne' King sang lead vocals, with Ronald Khalis Bell on bass, James Gadson on drums, and Michael Henderson on guitar. They put out a few more records through the mid-1970s, including 'The Road Less Traveled' in 1972 and 'Transformer' in 1976.
'Goodbye John' became their best-known track, a slow ballad written by King and Bell. The band's sound mixed soul and funk, with King's voice carrying most of the weight. They didn't stay together very long, and the lineup shifted around before things quieted down.
