Chico Batera was a samba band from Rio de Janeiro that started playing in the late 1980s. The group was led by percussionist Chico Batera and included members like Edmundo Gaspar on vocals, Fabio Gaspar on keyboards, and Alexandre Garnizoni on bass. They put out their first album, 'Ritmo de Vida,' in 1990, followed by records like 'Samba do Chico' in 1993 and 'Som da Cor' in 1996.
Their song 'Tiu Ru Ru' became well-known internationally. The band's music mixed samba with bossa nova and funk, and later incorporated some jazz, reggae, and rock elements. They worked with other Brazilian musicians including Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, and Jorge Ben Jor.
Some of their lyrics addressed social issues, which occasionally drew criticism. The band kept playing samba through those years, maintaining a focus on rhythm and percussion.
