Chico Chokolate formed in Salvador, Bahia in the late 1980s, originally calling themselves Grupo Chicotinho. The band had three members: Roberto Souza on vocals and guitar, Fernando "Cascadura" Pires on drums, and José "Bolinha" Leite on bass. In 1989, musical director Cid Trajano invited them to play at a festival in Rio de Janeiro, where they performed their mix of funk, samba, and rock.
Their debut album came out in 1990, featuring the track "Atômico." That song became their most recognizable piece. They released several more albums through the 1990s, including "Nação Cacique" in 1992, "Da Bahia para o Mundo" in 1995, and "Pelourinho" in 1997.
In the early 1990s, some conservative groups criticized their lyrics and dance moves. The band kept performing through that period. Their recorded work spans about a decade, mostly centered in the 1990s.
