Chico da Viola and Armando Lopes were a Brazilian duo who recorded together in the 1950s and 1960s. Chico da Viola, born Francisco Cândido Xavier in 1910, came from Batatais in São Paulo state and was known as a guitarist and composer. Armando Lopes, born in 1919, was a singer and songwriter from Rio de Janeiro. They met at a São Paulo radio station in the early 1950s and began working together.
Their song 'Minha mulher' came out in 1956 and became their best-known recording. It had straightforward lyrics about married life that some listeners at the time found surprisingly direct. The duo also released 'Solte Sua Emoção' and put out albums like 'Viola e Voz' in 1957 and 'Serenata Brasileira' in 1965.
Chico da Viola died in 1989, Armando Lopes in 1986. Their recordings, particularly 'Minha mulher,' still get played on Brazilian radio and at gatherings where people want to hear that particular sound from the mid-century.
