Chico de Assis was born in São Paulo in 1943. He started writing songs as a teenager, drawing from samba, bossa nova, and Brazilian folklore. In the 1960s, he performed at the nightclub Zum Zum alongside artists like Nara Leão and Elis Regina.
His debut album came out in 1968 and included 'Pixixita,' a ballad that became widely known in Brazil. The song has been covered by Gal Costa, Maria Bethânia, and Caetano Veloso.
Assis's career had some interruptions. He spent time in Europe during the 1970s before returning to Brazil in the 1980s and releasing more music, including the album 'Outra Vez' in 1985.
