Chinatown formed in São Paulo in 1984 with Luiz Caldas, Jorge Mautner, and Arnaldo Antunes. Their self-titled debut album came out that same year, anchored by the song 'Que Bom Seria,' which became their most recognizable track. They also recorded 'Se eu Não Lembrar de Você' and 'Turnê de Bar em Bar.'
In 1986, they faced plagiarism accusations about 'Que Bom Seria,' with claims it resembled a Donovan composition. That year they released a second album called 'Pintura Íntima.' They put out one more studio record, 'Samba Rock,' in 2001.
Their music mixed Brazilian popular styles with rock and sometimes reggae. The lyrics often dealt with love and everyday situations, delivered with Caldas's vocal style over arrangements that included Mautner's keyboard work.
