Choji formed in 1999 with Leo Henrique on vocals, Igor Guimarães on guitar, Rafael Guimarães on bass, and Fábio Gomes on drums. Their debut album came out in 2003, titled 'Meu Lado da História' after the song that became an early signature track.
They put out several more albums over the next decade, including 'Tempo de Refletir' in 2005, 'Tudo Que Eu Sou' in 2008, and 'O Que Eu Quero Dizer' in 2011. Their sound mixed pop, rock, and Brazilian folk elements, with lyrics that often touched on personal themes.
In 2009, the band got tangled in a legal dispute with a former manager over royalties and rights. The case dragged on for a while, creating some uncertainty during what had been a steady period of recording and touring.
