A 1970s British rock group known for their driving guitar sound and one massive international hit.
Start with "Yellow River" for the hit, then try "San Bernadino" to hear what else they were doing at the time. The self-titled 1971 album holds up.
You can't talk about early 70s British rock without mentioning "Yellow River." That single's Eastern-inspired melody and driving riff made it a UK and Australian hit in 1971, and it still pops up on classic rock radio. Songs like "San Bernadino" and "I'm Coming Home Tonight" from their debut album show they had more to offer than just one chart-topper.
The band formed in Leeds in 1969, originally called The Variations. They signed with CBS Records in 1971 and released "Yellow River" that same year, which defined their early success. Their sound took on a glam rock feel later in the decade, as heard on their 1976 album "For All Mankind."
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
