Christopher Norman was born in Bradford, England in 1950. He started playing music in the mid-1960s with a band called Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera, and later met Alan Silson. Together they formed what would become Smokie, a pop group that found international success in the 1970s with Norman as lead vocalist.
With Smokie, Norman sang on hits like "Living Next Door to Alice" and "If You Think You Know How to Love Me." The band went through lineup changes in the late 1970s and faced some legal disputes over songwriting credits.
In 1986, Norman released the solo single "The Other Side," which became a hit in several countries. He continued making music as a solo artist through the 1980s and 1990s.
