Archive material and source history

Chuck Brown was born in Gaston, North Carolina in 1936 and moved to Washington, D.C. in 1953. He played guitar and piano, drawing from blues, jazz, and R&B. In the mid-1970s, he and his band the Soul Searchers started mixing funk, soul, and African rhythms into something they called go-go, a high-energy dance style that became D.C.'s street soundtrack.

His 1979 hit 'Bustin Loose' broke through nationally, its groove turning up at weddings and parties everywhere. Other songs like 'Let The Good Times Roll' and 'Need Your Love So Bad' show the range he could cover within that D.C. sound.
