Chuy Quintanilla was born in Mission, Texas in 1959 and grew up around music, with his father playing accordion. He started Grupo Quintanilla in the early 1980s with his brother Rigoberto and cousin Johnny, putting out their first album 'Sensacional' in 1984. Their sound drew from traditional Mexican music, country, and rock.
In 1990, the single 'Juan García' became a major hit for the group, a ballad about unrequited love that gave Quintanilla the nickname 'El Rey del Romanticismo.' Other songs from that period include 'C.D.G vs Zetas' and 'El Comandante Hummer.' The band's lineup sometimes included accordionist Juan Moreno and guitarist Lorenzo Martinez.
Quintanilla faced a sexual assault accusation in 1995 that went to trial; he was acquitted, but the case affected his public standing. He kept recording with Grupo Quintanilla through the late 1990s and early 2000s, with albums like 'No Me Dejes' and 'Eterno Romántico.'
