José Refugio Ruelas Hinojosa was born in Soledad, Mexico in 1969. He started playing music as a teenager with a band called Los Gavilanes. In 1998, his debut album 'Dame Una Oportunidad' gave him his first major hit with the title track.
His music draws from traditional Mexican boleros and rancheras, with a vocal style that carries a raw emotional quality. He's released several albums including 'Tú Eres' in 2000 and 'Boleros de Amor' in 2013.
In 2008, Ruelas was arrested for drug possession and took some time away from performing. He returned to music and has worked with artists like Ana Bárbara and Lupita D'Alessio. He's married to Bety Rodríguez and has five children.
