Chyvonne Scott grew up in Harlem, where she heard gospel and soul music around her neighborhood. She started singing early, drawn to Ella Fitzgerald and Mahalia Jackson. In 2003, she put out her first album, simply called 'Chyvonne,' on Capitol Records. That record had 'I'm Moving On,' which got some radio play and introduced her to a wider audience.
A year later, she had a disagreement with Capitol about creative direction and left the label. She kept recording on her own, putting out 'The Other Side' in 2008 and 'Witness' in 2016. Those albums showed her trying different sounds and working with other musicians.
