Cidade Liberal formed in São Paulo in the early 1980s with Pedrinho Rocha, Sérgio Ricardo, and Fernando Mendes. They worked in a scene where punk and post-punk sounds were circulating, but their own music didn't catch on quickly. It took a few years before anything stuck.
In 1986, the single "Cinzas" changed things. The song got national attention in Brazil, partly because of its mood, a little haunted, a little introspective. Other tracks like "Como os Vendavais" and "Grito" followed, giving the band a small catalog that people remembered.
Their lyrics sometimes addressed social or political topics, which in that period could draw scrutiny. They put out albums like "Cidade Liberal" in 1984, "Dia das Rosas" in 1985, and "Noite" in 1987.
The lineup shifted after the founding trio. What they left behind was a handful of recordings that still get played by listeners who were around then, and a few song titles that turn up on playlists now and then.
