Cidade Santa formed in São Paulo in 1985, with Álvaro Silveira on vocals. Their 1992 album 'Mensageiro do Amor' gave them a national hit with the title track. The band's sound mixed rock with pop and electronic elements, and their lyrics often dealt with love and faith.
In 2003, drummer Christian Passos died in a car accident. The band also drew criticism in 2008 for a song some saw as critical of the Catholic Church. They kept playing through these challenges, with Silveira, guitarist Fábio Brazza, and bassist Cleber Althoff continuing to work together.
