Archive material and source history
Cidade Verde Sound System came together in the late 1980s in Rio de Janeiro's Cidade Verde neighborhood, where a group of musicians shared an interest in reggae. They were listening to Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, but started working on their own material.
Their 1993 album included 'Real Ganjaman,' which became something of an anthem for them. They recorded 'Negril' in 1995 with Jamaican producer Errol Thompson, and put out 'Brazilian Roots' in 2000 with Gilberto Gil appearing on it.
They were a predominantly black band in Brazil, and that shaped their experience in the music industry. Their songs like 'Missão de Paz' and 'No Coca' carried a social consciousness that connected with their audience.
