Ciro Monteiro was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1913. He grew up in poverty and had to leave school early to help his family, but he kept playing music. By the 1930s he was recording songs like "O Bonde de São Januário," a samba that caught the mood of Rio's working-class streets.
He worked with other musicians from that era, including Pixinguinha, Noel Rosa, and Dorival Caymmi. His recordings from the 1950s and 1960s, such as "Meu Samba É Assim" and "Ciro Monteiro Canta Pixinguinha," show him moving through different samba styles without losing his own voice.
Songs like "Alô, João," "O Que Se Leva Dessa Vida," and "Café Soçaite" stayed in his setlists for years. He kept performing until his death in 1989.
