Background notes

Archive material and source history

Class of '88 was a Los Angeles band that formed in the 1980s with members Michael Riley, Keith Mack, Tim Gaines, and Paul Rodgers. They had some attention with their debut single "Walking on the Ceiling," a new wave track that got some pushback from conservative groups who thought the lyrics hinted at drug use.

They put out a few albums in the late '80s and early '90s, including A New Beginning in 1988, Time to Move On in 1990, and Second Chance in 1992. Their sound mixed pop, rock, and funk but kept the melodic feel of songs like "Walking on the Ceiling."

Michael Riley was the main vocalist and lyricist, but he had problems with addiction. Keith Mack wrote songs too, and Tim Gaines and Paul Rodgers played bass and drums. The band didn't last very long, but they had that one single that people remember.
