Club Kuru formed in London around the late 1990s, built around singer-songwriter Alex Fergusson and guitarist Ed Roe. Their sound had a certain unsettled quality, with Fergusson's raw vocals working against Roe's ethereal guitar lines. The lineup later included bassist Dave Tomlinson and drummer Chris Head.
Their debut single "Film Credits" came out in 2002 and became their most recognizable track. The song's lyrics dealt with disillusionment and mortality, delivered over a haunting melody that caught people's attention. Other songs from that period, like "Giving In" and "The Photography I Know So Well," followed a similar introspective path.
The band's work was always more about mood and texture than conventional song structures, which made them a particular kind of indie act, one that drew listeners in but never quite aimed for the mainstream.
