Club Ovelha Negra formed in 1985, around a decade after Portugal's Carnation Revolution. Their name translates to Black Sheep, which fit their position outside the mainstream. Rui Reininho was their vocalist from the start, and the band's early sound pulled from punk and rockabilly alongside Portuguese folk traditions.
Their lyrics sometimes ran into trouble with censors and conservative listeners, but they kept writing what they wanted. One of their best-known songs is 'Eternamente Desiguais,' which became an anthem for many young Portuguese listeners in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
They put out albums like 'Se Eu Fosse Um... Gato' in 1986, 'Imaginário' in 1990, and 'Sem Medo' in 2003. João Monge played guitar and Duarte Pereira was also in the lineup for years. The group's music stayed rooted in rock but never settled into one predictable style.
