Archive material and source history

Coalesce formed in Buffalo, New York in the early 1990s with Sean Ingram on vocals, Jes Steineger on guitar, Dan McShane on bass, and James Dewees on drums. Their sound was a raw collision of metal and hardcore from the start, avoiding conventional melody for something more dissonant and confrontational.

Their 1996 debut 'Give Them Rope' established their uncompromising approach, followed by albums like 'Function Over Form' and '01010101010101' that kept pushing at the edges of underground metal. The 2000 album '73-C' featured a guest appearance from Mike Patton and contained some of their most experimental material, including the title track '73-C' and songs like 'A Disgust For Details' and 'Black Dog'.

Shortly after '73-C' was released, drummer James Dewees left the band to focus on his work with The Get Up Kids.
