Coco de Roda e Ciranda formed in Recife in 1999, with founding members Nóia on vocals, Bugalu on bass, and Beijoca on percussion. They took their name from two traditional Pernambuco folk forms, the coco de roda dance and the ciranda melody, and built their sound around those roots.
Their 2004 debut album 'A Cobra' gave them their first major attention. The title track, along with songs like 'Despedida' and 'Boa Noite,' mixed traditional percussion with more contemporary arrangements. The band has since released other albums, including 'Carambola' in 2006 and 'Piracema' in 2015.
Their lyrics sometimes address social or political themes, which has occasionally sparked debate. They've collaborated with artists like Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, and the current lineup includes guitarist Igor Santos and percussionist Juninho Assunção alongside the original trio.
