Archive material and source history
Cocodilos formed in 1968 in Salvador, Bahia, with Luiz Galvão on vocals, Jorge Mautner on guitar and vocals, Guilherme Arantes on keyboards, Paulo Guimarães on bass, and Serginho Sa on drums. They came together during Brazil's Tropicália movement, though their sound was their own mix of Brazilian rhythms and more experimental approaches.
Their song "Ovo Frito" became their most recognizable track. They released three albums between 1969 and 1971, simply titled "Cocodilos," "Cocodilos 2," and "Cocodilos 3." Other songs like "Canguru" and "Chokita" show the range they worked in, from straightforward rhythms to more layered arrangements.
One song, "Deixa a Menina," was censored. The band didn't last much beyond their three albums, but those records hold a specific place in that moment of Brazilian music.
