Cocofunka formed in the Asturias region of Spain in the early 2000s, led by vocalist and songwriter Diego "Dimi" Fernández. Their debut album "Asturión" came out in 2004, with the title track becoming something of an anthem for the area. The band's sound mixed funk rhythms with traditional Asturian melodies, which caught attention both locally and further afield.
The song "El Llibru" drew criticism from conservative circles for its take on the Catholic Church. Despite that, the band kept recording, putting out albums like "Xana" in 2006, "La Marea" in 2008, and "Arribes" in 2019.
