Cohiba formed in Buenos Aires in 1987 with Mariano Martínez on vocals, Diego Conte on guitar, Andrés Calamaro on bass, and Fernando Samalea on drums. They signed with EMI and released their self-titled debut album in 1988, which included the hit 'Cometa Halley.' That song became their signature track, its melody and lyrics connecting with Argentine audiences.
Andrés Calamaro left the band in 1989, replaced by Alejandro Lerner on bass. They kept recording through the 1990s, putting out albums like 'El Rescate' in 1990 and 'Apareció Una Luna' in 1992. Other songs from their catalog include 'Da Cabeça aos Pés' and 'Velhos Jornais.'
In the early 2000s, Cohiba regrouped for reunion tours and some new material. The lineup has remained Martínez, Conte, Lerner, and Samalea since Calamaro's departure.
