Coko, born Charisse Rose, first sang in her hometown church choir. She formed SWV (Sisters with Voices) with Taj Johnson and Lelee Lyons in the early 1990s, and their debut album 'It's About Time' included the hit 'All My Lovin'. The group's sound blended R&B with gospel touches from those choir roots.

After SWV went on hiatus in 1998, Coko released her solo album 'Hot Coochie' in 2001. Songs like 'Bigger Than We' and 'I Ain't Feelin' You' showed her moving into more personal territory while keeping the vocal style that defined her earlier work with the group.

She has spoken publicly about living with bipolar disorder, framing it as part of her experience rather than a dramatic career turning point. Her music since then, including tracks like 'Endow Me' and 'Everytime', continues to draw on both the group harmonies of SWV and the directness of her solo material.
