Cole Porter

Cole Porter was born in Peru, Indiana in 1891 and studied at Yale University. He wrote both music and lyrics for his songs, which was unusual for Broadway composers of his time. His 1928 Broadway debut with 'Paris' established his reputation for sophisticated wordplay and memorable melodies.

Porter wrote over 800 songs for Broadway productions including 'Anything Goes' in 1934, 'Kiss Me, Kate' in 1948, and 'Can-Can' in 1953. His songs like 'Night & Day' and 'Let's Do It' combined clever lyrics with jazz-influenced harmonies that felt both urbane and emotionally direct.

His personal life remained largely private while his work circulated widely through theater, film, and recordings. Songs like 'Every Time We Say Goodbye' and 'So In Love' continue to be recorded by artists across genres, maintaining their place in the American songbook without the need for biographical drama.
