Colin James was born in Regina, Saskatchewan in 1964. He started playing guitar early, drawing from blues and rock influences like Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
His self-titled debut album came out in 1988, featuring the song "Why'd You Lie." He followed it with records like 1990's "Sudden Stop" and 1993's "Colin James and the Little Big Band II." Some of his other songs include "About To Go Down" and "Baby It's Cold Outside."
In the mid-1990s, he took a break from music due to personal and financial issues. He returned to recording and performing afterward. In 2010, there was some discussion about the lyrics to "About To Go Down," which James said was meant to address social themes.
