Collapsed System formed in 1999 as a trio from Chicago, with DJ Rush, Paul Johnson, and DJ Misjah. They worked in acid techno, pulling from the industrial textures of their hometown and the experimental edges of artists like Aphex Twin and Richie Hawtin. Their sound was built on distorted vocals, unconventional structures, and a relentless, pulsing rhythm section that didn't aim for mainstream techno comfort.

Their debut album 'Acid Nation' arrived in 2001 and quickly found an audience among electronic music listeners looking for something rougher. The title track, along with songs like 'Atomic Asphyxia' and 'Berlin 2007,' defined their approach: heavy, hypnotic, and unapologetically raw. That record became a touchstone for a certain strain of acid techno, earning them a dedicated following without smoothing out their edges.

DJ Rush was often cited as the project's driving force, known for thunderous basslines and energetic DJ sets. Paul Johnson brought a precise, melodic sensibility to the productions.
