Comboio Percussivo formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1997, started by Marcos André, Rafael dos Santos, and Rubinho Liporage. The name translates to "Percussion Train," which fits how they work as a collective of musicians rather than a fixed band. They put out their first album the next year, simply called Comboio Percussivo.
Their sound comes from Brazilian samba rhythms, with some Afro-Brazilian and folk elements mixed in. They've released records like Samba de Maracatu in 2000, A Ladeira da Preguiça in 2003, and Sobre As Águas in 2006. One of their tracks, "Lélia," became part of a legal dispute around 2006 over who owned the rights to it.
Other musicians who've played with them include Marcello Gonçalves, Jefferson Dias, and Rafael Pinheiro. They marked twenty years together with a 2017 album called Comboio Percussivo: 20 Anos.
