The name means 'God of Israel' in Yoruba, and they aimed to reach younger listeners with music that mixed gospel and soul with African rhythms. Their first album, 'Água Viva', came out in 1985 and helped them gain attention in Brazil.
Songs like 'Jesus, de Todos Salvador' and 'Rogai Por Nós, Ó Mãe' became well-known in Christian circles, with 'Jesus, de Todos Salvador' in particular spreading widely after its release in the mid-1990s. They kept recording through the late '80s and early '90s, putting out albums such as 'Amor e Verdade' and 'Abraça-me' that built on their blend of worship and traditional sounds.
