Conception formed in Norway in 1989, growing out of an earlier group called Turn the Page. Their original lineup included vocalist Roy Khan, guitarist Tore Østby, bassist Ingar Amlien, drummer Arve Heimdal, and keyboardist Hans Chr. Gjestvang. They put out four albums between 1991 and 1997, starting with their self-titled debut and following with 'Parallel Minds' in 1993.

Their 1993 album 'Parallel Minds' gave its name to one of their better-known songs, and another track from their catalog, 'Feather Moves,' became a particular favorite among listeners. The band's sound worked within progressive metal, with clear nods to the style of groups like Queensrÿche and Dream Theater.

Roy Khan left the band in 1998, which marked a significant shift. Conception was largely inactive for several years after that, though they did reunite briefly for some live shows in 2005. They haven't released new studio material since their 1997 album 'Flow.'
