Conjunto Maravilha formed in 1964 in São José de Piranhas, a small town in northeastern Brazil. They started as Conjunto Irmãos Contreiras, a group of young men playing traditional Brazilian rhythms with gospel lyrics. As they toured the northeast performing at religious festivals, their name changed to Conjunto Maravilha.
Their song 'A Igreja Segue Caminhando' came out in 1969 and caused some trouble with the Brazilian Catholic Church. The lyrics about the church's resilience were taken by some as criticism of church authority. Catholic radio stations wouldn't play it, and it wasn't allowed in many church services.
Despite that, the song found its audience among Brazilian Christians who heard something hopeful in it. It became one of their most recognized pieces, even with the initial resistance from church institutions.
