Archive material and source history

The Contours started as a vocal group in Detroit in the late 1950s, originally calling themselves The Five Chimes. They worked with Berry Gordy at Motown, where they recorded "Do You Love Me" in 1962. That song became their biggest hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Their lineup included Billy Hoggs, Anthony Washington, Joe Billingslea, Sylvester Potts, and Billy Gordon. They put out albums like The Contours in 1962 and Do You Love Me Baby the following year. Another track, "First I look at the purse," shows their style from that period.

The group dealt with some difficult stretches, including a car accident in 1967 that injured members. They kept recording through the mid-1960s with albums like The Exciting Contours and Soul of the Contours, but never matched the success of that first single.
