The Coral Meninas de Porto Murtinho is a female choir from the remote town of Porto Murtinho in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. It was founded in 1997 by Sister Maria José de Lima, a Catholic nun who gathered young girls from the town, many from underprivileged backgrounds, to sing together. Their song 'Esperança' became one of their best-known pieces.
They released albums including 'Esperança' in 2001, 'Caravana da Esperança' in 2007, and 'Canções do Nosso Povo' in 2012. Their music has taken them across Brazil and to international stages.
At one point, their song 'Esperança' was accused of plagiarizing a folk melody from Paraguay, though the choir denied this, saying it was an original composition inspired by their own experiences. The dispute eventually faded. In their conservative local society, the idea of young girls performing on stage initially met some resistance, but they gradually won over their community.
