Background notes

Archive material and source history

The Cornelius Brothers were a soul vocal group from Chicago, formed by four siblings in the late 1950s. They started out singing in local churches, influenced by gospel and earlier harmony groups like the Ink Spots. In 1962, they released their debut album 'Treat Her Right' on Atlantic Records after catching producer Jerry Wexler's attention.

Their biggest hit came in 1969 with 'Too Late To Turn Back Now,' which topped the R&B charts. The song's falsetto harmonies and earnest delivery made it their most recognizable work. Another track, 'Treat Her Like a Lady,' also found an audience around that time.

Internal disagreements about musical direction led to a split in 1975. Eddie and Fred continued as the Cornelius Brothers, while Harold and Quincy pursued other projects. The original lineup reunited briefly in 1995 for an album, but it didn't last. Their music, particularly those late-60s singles, remains the part of their story that stuck.
