Background notes

Archive material and source history

Cornell Campbell was born in St. Mary, Jamaica in 1948. He started recording in 1968 on the Treasure Isle label, and later worked with producer Coxsone Dodd at Studio One in the early 1970s. That collaboration produced tracks like 'Natty Dread Takes Over' and 'The Gorgon'.

His 1977 album 'Jah Jah Me Horn Yah' gave him his most recognizable song. The title track became something of an anthem in reggae circles, and another song from that period, 'Fight Against Corruption,' shows the kind of straightforward, spiritually-minded roots music he was making. His recordings were often backed by the Roots Radics band.

Campbell kept releasing albums into the 2000s, including 'Tradition' in 1983 and 'A New Day' in 2005. His voice and his songs, grounded in Rastafari spirituality, have remained a steady presence in the genre.
