Editor's note

Courtney Love, the raw voice of Hole

From the noise of 'Pretty on the Inside' to solo cuts like 'Mono', her writing stays direct.

For the Hole years, 'Drown Soda' holds up. Later, a track like 'Mono' still has that same unflinching tone.

Her work with Hole in the early '90s gave a sharp, unvarnished edge to the alternative scene. Songs like 'Drown Soda' and 'Mono' don't soften their delivery, even as her sound shifted after the band ended. That blunt lyrical voice has kept her music distinct for decades.

She started making music in the early 1980s before forming Hole with Eric Erlandson in 1989. The band's debut 'Pretty on the Inside' arrived in 1991, and she later released solo albums like 'America's Sweetheart' after Hole ended in 2002. She's kept performing and working with other musicians since.

Courtney Love was born in San Francisco in 1964. She started making music in the early 1980s, first with a band called Sugar Baby Doll. Her breakthrough came when she teamed up with Eric Erlandson to form Hole in 1989, serving as the band's lead singer and lyricist.

Hole's debut album 'Pretty on the Inside' arrived in 1991 with a raw, confessional sound that found an audience. Love's marriage to Kurt Cobain in 1992 brought her further into the public eye, though the attention wasn't always welcome. Cobain's death in 1994 and the custody disputes over their daughter Frances Bean followed.

After Hole ended in 2002, Love released solo albums including 'America's Sweetheart' in 2004 and 'Nobody's Daughter' in 2010. Her songs like 'Mono' and 'Miss Narcissist' continued her direct lyrical approach. She has kept performing and working with other musicians since then.
