Cowboy Urbano Ney Lima came up in the interior of Bahia, where he grew up hearing forro and baião around him. He started performing at local festivals as a teenager, and in 1991 he took on the stage name Cowboy Urbano, mixing those rural sounds with something of Salvador's urban feel.
His song 'Despedida de Solteiro' became a kind of national standard, its lyrics about leaving home for the city hitting a nerve at weddings and farewells all over Brazil. Other tracks like 'Antigo Bem' and 'Cordas do Amor' kept that plainspoken, heartfelt quality.
Early on, some critics wrote off his music as country kitsch, but he kept at it. By 2014, he was still working, though the existing record trails off there.
