Cranes

Cranes formed in Liverpool in the early 1990s around siblings Alison and Jim Shaw. Their debut album 'Wings of Joy' came out in 1991, establishing a sound built on Alison's distinctive vocals and Jim's guitar work. Songs like 'Everywhere' and 'Jewel' from that period show their approach: atmospheric, with a certain quiet intensity that didn't fit neatly into the louder alternative rock of the time.

Alison Shaw's stage presence was noted for being understated, which drew mixed reactions. Some listeners found it compelling, others thought it lacked energy. Their music sometimes incorporated folk or ambient touches, but the core dynamic between the siblings' contributions remained.

They put out records through the mid-90s and into the 2000s, including 'La tragédie est l'avenir' in 1995. Tracks such as 'Pale Blue Sky' and 'Shining Road' continued in that vein, dreamlike, with a persistent melodic focus. Cranes never became a mainstream act, but they maintained a consistent output for their listeners.
