The group was fronted by Johnny "Mad Dog" Hayes, with Tommy "Thunderbolt" Jones on guitar, Billy "Bones" Smith on bass, and Joey "Animal" Perkins on drums.
Their music mixed heavy metal, punk, and glam rock, built on driving guitar riffs and Hayes's raspy vocals. They released albums like "Crazy Girl" in 1989, "Boys Will Be Boys" in 1991, and "The Freak Show" in 1993. Their stage shows sometimes involved pyrotechnics and drew criticism from conservative groups.
Crazy Freaks disbanded in 1997. Their recordings from that period still turn up on rock playlists, with "Crazy Girl" being the track most people remember.
