Criminal Brain

Criminal Brain formed in New York City in the late 1990s around vocalist and guitarist Ethan Zander, with bassist Nick Rodriguez and drummer Alex Russo. They built a following through steady gigging in the underground scene, where their aggressive sound and direct lyrics stood out. Their debut album 'Urban Warfare' came out in 2002, anchored by the single 'Criminal Brain' that gave the band its name.

That self-titled track, along with songs like 'Killing Joke' and 'Mortal Sins,' carried a raw blend of hip-hop, punk, and metal. The band released several more albums over the next decade, including 'Insanity Plea' in 2005 and 'The Art of Rebellion' in 2008. Their live shows were known for high energy, with stage dives and crowd surfing becoming part of their reputation.

Their lyrics often touched on social injustice and mental health, which sometimes drew criticism for being too confrontational or violent. The band members cited influences ranging from Public Enemy and Rage Against the Machine to The Clash and Metallica, which helped shape their hybrid sound. They kept recording and playing through the 2000s, with 'Unleashed' arriving in 2012.
