Criminal Shift formed in Detroit in 2007 with vocalist Josh Middleton, guitarist Nick Miller, bassist Mike Elliott, and drummer Matt Evans. They started playing local clubs, building a following through live shows. Their debut album 'The Awakening' came out in 2012, featuring the song 'Snow' which drew attention for its subject matter about addiction and loss.
After that first album, they put out several more records including 'Ashes to Dust' in 2015, 'The Abyss' in 2018, and 'Catalyst' in 2021. Their sound shifted over time from thrash metal toward something more melodic and atmospheric. The lineup changed too, drummer Matt Evans left in 2016, replaced by Chris Armstrong, and guitarist Nick Miller departed in 2020 with Ben Jacobs taking his place.
