Crisis

Crisis formed in London in 1977 with Steve Ignorant on vocals, Douglas Pearce and Tony Wakeford on guitars, Geoff Myles on bass, and Brian Johnson on drums. Their early shows had a raw, confrontational energy, with lyrics that took on social injustice and government oppression.

Their music pulled from punk's aggression but had its own heavy, driving sound. Songs like '2 Minutes Hate' and 'Drilling Me' became rallying points, with Ignorant's guttural delivery over distorted guitars and pounding basslines. The band drew on anarchist ideas and writers like George Orwell, but the music always came first.

Crisis faced regular pushback from authorities and right-wing groups for their outspoken stance. Their refusal to soften their message meant performances were often met with opposition, but it also cemented their reputation as a band that meant what they played.
