Cristina Madeira's debut album 'Acorda-me o Desespero' came out in 1999, with the title track becoming something of an anthem for listeners who recognized its particular kind of emotional weight. She followed it with albums like 'O Silêncio da Noite' in 2001 and 'Vozes do Coração' in 2003, building a discography that often explored themes of despair and resilience. Songs like 'Já Não Choro' and 'Novo Rumo' continued in this vein, with lyrics that could feel unflinching in their directness.

Her music drew from Portuguese traditions like fado, but her approach was her own, less formal, more raw.
