Editor's note

Crowded House, the pop band from Neil Finn

A New Zealand-Australian group known for sharp, melodic songs like 'Don't Dream It's Over'.

If you want to get what they do, listen to 'Don't Dream It's Over' and 'Into Temptation'. That's the sound.

They wrote songs that stuck around. 'Don't Dream It's Over' is one of those tunes that just feels familiar, even if you don't know the name. Their sound was clean, guitar-based pop with Finn's voice up front, and it connected in a way that lasted beyond the '80s. A song like 'Into Temptation' from their top tracks shows that same knack for a memorable melody.

Neil Finn started the band in 1985 after Split Enz, with Nick Seymour and Paul Hester. Their first album landed the next year, and 'Don't Dream It's Over' became the song everyone knew. They kept making records through the early '90s, but Hester's death in 1994 changed things; they've carried on since with different lineups.

Crowded House formed in 1985 when Neil Finn, who had been in Split Enz, started working with bassist Nick Seymour and drummer Paul Hester. Their self-titled debut album came out the following year and did well in New Zealand and Australia. The song 'Don't Dream It's Over' from that record became their most recognizable track.

They kept making albums through the late '80s and early '90s, including 'Temple of Low Men' and 'Woodface.' Other songs like 'Weather With You' and 'Better Be Home Soon' became staples for them. The band's sound had a straightforward pop quality, with Finn's writing at the center.

In 1994, Paul Hester died by suicide. The band took some time after that but eventually continued recording and touring with different drummers. They've put out several more albums since, though that early run with Hester remains what most people know them for.
