Crystal Ball formed in 1983 with Jimmy Messina on vocals, Kim Look on guitar, J.P. Lovecraft on bass, and Scott Skinner on drums. They came up playing heavy metal and melodic hard rock, and their first album came out in 1985. It was called 'Balls of Steel,' and the title track gave them their first real break.

Messina's vocals were a big part of their sound, and the band's live shows had a reputation for being loud and energetic. They put out a few more records after that, like 'Against the Wind' in 1987 and 'Heart of Stone' in 1989. Some of their other songs include 'Anyone Can Be a Hero' and 'Bird On A Wire.'

But they kept recording into the early '90s with albums like 'Edge of Insanity' and 'Phoenix Rising.'
